Iron sharpens iron: Cornerstone throwers raise the bar

The throwers at Cornerstone Christian School are making a statement this season, led by Jorge Serna, who set a new school record in discus with a throw of 160 feet, while Dom Moore and Brandon Stewart continue to deliver standout performances in their respective events.

“I knew coming into the season I had a goal to break the record, and I just stayed consistent every day in practice,” Serna said. “When I finally hit 160, it felt like all the work paid off.”

Serna’s achievement didn’t happen in isolation. The competitive environment among the throwers has played a major role in pushing each athlete to improve.

“Having someone like Dom right there with me makes a big difference,” Serna said. “We’re always pushing each other, and it brings out the best in both of us.”

That rivalry is especially clear in the discus ring, where Dom Moore has gone neck and neck with Serna throughout the season.

“It definitely motivates me,” Moore said. “Every meet, I’m trying to match or beat his throw, and it pushes me to stay locked in and keep improving.”

While the discus competition has drawn attention, the shot put circle has also been a key area of strength for the team.

“I’ve been focused on my technique and getting more explosive,” Stewart said. “Hitting 49 feet felt good, but I know I can still go farther.”

The shared mindset among the throwers reflects a larger culture within the group—one built on accountability and constant improvement.

“We all want to win, but we also want each other to succeed,” Moore said. “That’s what makes our group strong.”

With a record-breaking throw from Jorge Serna, a close competitor in Dom Moore, and a powerful showing from Brandon Stewart in shot put, the throwers at Cornerstone Christian School are proving that their strength lies not just in distance, but in the way they push each other to be better every day.
